Technical details

VNC (for Virtual Network Computing) is a program developed by Olivetti & Oracle Research Laboratory for internal use and made freely available under the GPL. VNC defines a protocol for remote bitmapped display, and the software, available for a number of different platforms, consists mainly of a server and a viewer program. The server appears to X clients as an X display, and the viewer can display this X display on the viewer's host's display, which may be X or some other graphics model, as just another window.

There are a number of different uses for this software, but the one described here is to set up the VNC server as an X server with an 8-bit PseudoColor visual, and the VNC viewer will then display this as a client to whatever X display the graphics programs are to be displayed on.

More information on VNC, as well as the software for download, is available at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/.
